Mixed Genre Analysis
Opening Sequnce - LEGEND
Within the film LEGEND's opening sequence the Mise en scene and in particular costumes and props that are used make this opening sequence unique to the film and it fits it's genre which is Crime film/Drama film because the two characters "Ronnie" and "Reggie" Kray are in character and they look like the stereotypical east end gangster of that era because they have the smart suit on with slicked back hair and smoking in a car with lots of jewellery on which is a stereotype of the typical east end gangster of that time. The sound for this opening sequence is mainly dialogue as there is a female character speaking as a narrator who's giving a brief introduction to the film and explaining a short bit of background information. She also speaks about the two main characters "Ronnie" and "Reggie" Kray which is significant as they are the two main characters and this is the first time in the film where they get introduced.

Opening Sequence - Monsters Inc.
The opening sequence for Monsters Inc. has a serif typography and this represents a sophisticated and clear text. Also there is a lot of editing involved in this opening sequence and it is mainly all animations on the screen. Due to the complex editing and all the animations this shows that the film is a kids film because of all the animations which are appropriate for a child and they would find this aesthetically better and more interactive as the animations will be more entertaining to a child. Also there is a variety of colours in this opening sequence and some very bright and vibrant colours which will also be appealing to the audience which are mainly children. There isn't much cinematography in this opening sequence and no camera shots because it's all animations and a lot of edited things .

Opening Sequence - Django Unchained
For this opening sequence the typography is written in sans serif and this represents a more modern text even though the film isn't that new or modern. Also the cinematography that is used within this opening sequence and the camera shots in particular which is a tracking shot introduce the film as it is a over the shoulder shot of the main character "Django" and it shows his wounds on his back which lets the audience know what sort of film they will be watching and it is a brief introduction to the film. It also introduces the audience to some of the characters that will be in the film. There isn't a lot of complex editing within this opening sequence and it is fairly simple and easy to watch with not too much going on. The sound in the opening sequence has a theme tune going on in the background.

Specific Genre Analysis Crime/Drama
GoodFellas Opening Sequence
|
The opening sequence to "Goodfellas" is effective because of the cinematography that is used within it and all the different camera shots that are used. There are a range of shots that are used in the opening sequence such as an establishing shot which helps the audience understand the background of the scene. Also in addition to this at the very beginning of the opening sequence there is a tracking shot that is used which pans around the travelling car which shows the importance of the car and the characters inside the car.
Then the typography that is used during the middle of the opening sequence is also effective as it shows where the film is set and the year the film is set which is significant as it gives the audience more detail and guidance as to the setting of the film and it also makes the rest of the film make sense so for example the way people dress or talk of that time in 1970 in New York. The sound within the Goodfellas opening sequence is significant because there is diegetic sound that is used which shows that what is being visually displayed is remaining faithful to it's sound. In addition to this there is dialogue within the opening sequence between the characters on screen which reveals how each character sounds and gives the audience a bit more detail about the character. |
The Firm Opening Sequence
|
The opening sequence to "The Firm" is effective due to the cinematography that is used and in particular the use of the tracking shot at the beginning that follows the main character in the film. This is significant because it is the first thing you see and it shows the importance of that character. In addition to this another camera shot that is used is the mid shot and this is effective because it gives the main character a identity and shows his appearance in more detail so that the audience can recognise him.
The opening sequence is also effective because of the mise en scene and in particular the costume and the outfit that the main character wears. This is important as it sets the scene for the film and it shows and gives the main character a bit of identity and lets the audience know a bit more about him and what he's like. The sound within the opening sequence is also significant as the song "Get Down On It" is played throughout the opening scene and this indicates what year the film is being set in as that song was released in the 80s (1981) which lets the audience know what era the film was set in. This is the only sound in the opening sequence apart from the last few seconds where we begin to hear a bit of background noise and chatter from the other characters which is diegetic sound as we can hear what is being displayed visually and it remains faithful to it's original source. |
Italian Job Opening Sequence
|
For this opening sequence it is effective because of the cinematography that is used and the establishing shot that is used at the very beginning which sets the scene to the film and it also gives a brief insight as to where the film is being shot. In addition to this another shot that is used within the opening sequence is the mid shot and this is effective because it introduces the audience to the character for the first time and it shows the audience what the main character looks like. Also all the different camera angles that are used within and around the car and on the road looking at the car are effective because it shows all the different perspectives and angles of the car and it makes the opening sequence more interesting and engaging to the audience. Furthermore the first person camera shots and POV shot that are used also show off and show the landscape in the background and how nice it looks which makes the opening sequence come across as very nice and ascetically pleasing.
The sound that is used in this opening sequence fits the visual content that is displayed because of the song that is playing in the background of the scene and this song is appropriate for the opening scene because it is a easy song to listen to and is fairly relaxing which links to the scenery of all the mountains in the background. Although the opening sequence is fairly short being only 2:55 minutes this portrays what is being displayed as the main character is driving a fast car (lambourgini) which is effective because it is the opposite of the length of the video. |
Production Company logos analysis
Universal
The first company logo that I will be analysing is Universal. The main image and the main attraction of the Universal logo is the planet earth at the centre of the screen and this can be a representation of what the company Universal are about which is being seen worldwide and available for everyone on earth to see what they are a part of. And also the earth represents how Universal are one of or if not the best film companies in the world and it could also be seen as how powerful the company Universal are. Furthermore the shine at the top left part of the earth is also significant because it is a representation that there is more to come from Universal and they are still developing and progessing to be an even bigger and even more successful company.
Paramount |
For the Paramount logo the 24 stars surrounding the mountain are very significant because they represent the first 24 actors and actresses that signed with paramount. The logo itself is very effective and the mountain is a representation of what the company Paramount are like which is strength power and confidence which are all connotations for a mountain. In addition to this by the setting of the logo being up in the sky and above the clouds at the top of the mountain this could suggest that, that is the aim and objective for paramount which is to be above every other film company and be at the top of what they do and be the very best in the industry at what they do. Furthermore, the colours used in the Paramount logo are also easy on the eye as they aren't too vibrant or harsh to look at and they colours such as blue represent peace and tranquility which links in to the image itself of the mountain which is a peaceful image that is nice to look at.
|
This is the Paramount logo throughout the years showing the very first original logo and what it looked like starting the company off and then shows the progression as the company grew and became more and more powerful and became more successful. This success is reflected in the companies logos as the years go on as it shows development in the logo and how it's change as time goes on

Warner Bros
The very first Warner Bro logo had a image of the studio that was used and it still had the shield which has remained consistent throughout every Warner Bro logo. Also Warner Bros have acquired the two colours blue and gold which is often associated with the logo and the colour gold connotes luxury and sophistication and the colour blue connotes trust loyalty and peacefulness. In addition to this the background behind the main theme of the logo is in the sky and clouds which could be a representation of what Warner Bros are trying to achieve which is being the best in their industry and above everyone else.
